Fragment of a letter by Jan Mikołaj Cieszkowski to August Czartoryski

Jan M. Cieszkowski, the commissioner of Ruthenian lands, informs that Ruthenian land elders oppress the Jews from the Voivode's estates charging them with ever increasing taxes and do not summon the councils in his towns. He tried to force the convocation of the assembly in the Voivode's estates, but it will take place in Załoźce, and only the Jews from L’viv have announced that they will not turn up. He tried to intervene with the Treasurer so that the Ruthenian poll tax tariff was not accepted by him if it was created without the participation of the Jews from L’viv . He also asked the Treasurer to order that the next assembly be held in Czartoryski’s town. In addition, he advised the imprisonment of the Marshal of the land as then they would vote for the salary for the Voivode
