Complaint by the Opatów Jews against the land elder of Opatów, Haszkiel Jeleniowicz

The Jews of Opatów ask their landlord to exclude a land elder from the activities of the kahal, seeing that the kahal elders do his bidding. The Jews of Opatów ask for more land elders to be appointed in the town. They claim that the current elder over-taxes them and works against the best interest of the town. They demand a representative of Opatów be delegated in the future to the congresses of the Four Lands’ Council. The elder, or his predecessors, never issued a receipt to the town for the money the townspeople have contributed. The elder refuses to allow the land accountants to inspect the register of the land. Haszkiel and his sons are acting against the interests of the Opatów kahal.
