Settlement between Chełm elders and the elders of the Bełz voivodeship aiming at ending their disagreement

The elders of Bełz and Chełm made a settlement under the deposit of 100 ducats, according to which the Bełz elders abandoned seeking separation from the land. Because the Bełz elders paid a commission from the amount of 5,500 zlotys to the Bełz Dominican Nuns, they received a relief in poll tax of 150 zlotys. In the case of the tax exemption of 2,000 zlotys it was decided that it will be judged by the court of rabbis of the main cities headed by the rabbi of Bełz. Chełm elders pledged to help the Bełz kahal elders in its disputes with subordinate communities. It was agreed that in order to assess poll tax in the land, the land marshal residing in the land of Chełm would be obliged to summon Bełz elders to come to the designated city 8 days before the set date. In the event of their refusal, the poll tax tariff for the Chełm-Bełz land would also be valid without the signature of Bełz elders. By way of exception, Bełz elders were allowed to have an appraiser at the Jewish council in Jarosław in 1729. Disputes over the poll tax between the Bełz community and the Jews from Jarczów and between the Chełm and Tarnogóra communities were to be judged by land rabbis. In turn, Chełm elders were to settle tax disputes between the Bełz community and the remaining communities of the Bełz voivodeship formed during the Tarnogród Confederation.
