Selection of documents from the trial between the Jews of the Sandomierz economy and the Ulanów kahal held before the Radom tribunal

The plenipotentiaries of the Sandomierz economy (royal private estates) and the Ulanów kahal submitted a list (summary) containing 26 documents from the years 1747-1750 with attachments (including decrees of the congressional courts, agreements concluded between parties, decrees of the rabbis of the Zamość Entailed Estate, and poll tax allocations created by Zamość land elders). The Jewish leaseholders from the Sandomierz economy wanted to separate from the Ulanów kahal with the intention of joining the Rozwadów kahal. They did not want to pay a salary to the rabbi of Ulanów, nor the lodgings for the cantor and shames, nor commission on loans taken by the Ulanów kahal, nor to co-finance travel costs to Zamość, repair the cemetery, or deliver wax for candles to the synagogue. For some of the leaseholders, it was difficult to go to Ulanów, on the other side of the San River. The Ulanów kahal cast curses on the disobedient Jews from the Sandomierz economy and forbade them from using the local synagogue. Jews from economy estates were dissatisfied above all with the amount of poll tax imposed on them. The provisions of the preliminary settlement concluded in Nisko (1748) in the presence of the Tarnogród rabbi and four arbitrators, setting the poll tax for economy’s Jews at 615 zlotys, were questioned by the Ulanów kahal.
